Projects

Towards a net-zero climate-resilient Ebre Delta (Net-Zero)

Objectives

The project aims to develop innovative methods to monitor greenhouse gas capture and emissions in the natural wetlands and rice fields of the Ebro Delta. It will evaluate how the management of these wetlands, both natural and agricultural, influences carbon emissions and capture, as well as coastal vulnerability to climate change. The results will support the co-design of a roadmap that will include adaptation actions, wetland restoration, and emission reduction strategies in these ecosystems, aligned with the EU’s climate neutrality goals and the climate and adaptation legislation of Catalonia.

The project’s overarching objective is to produce a roadmap of best practices to reduce GHG emissions, increase carbon sequestration and improve adaptation to flooding and erosion through nature-based solutions and ecosystem-based management, such as wetland restoration and improved management of rice cultivation.

Activities

  1. Compile existing data and establish GHG monitoring stations in wetlands of the Ebro Delta to assess their climate mitigation potential.
  2. Assess climate change impacts on coastal flooding and erosion.
  3. Modeling the effects of climate change and wetland management on mitigation and adaptation potential.
  4. Roadmap to inform land management and planning decisions towards a net-zero climate-resilient Delta.
